KAIHA Monthly Board Meeting Highlights


November 2016

-Instituted a Task Management Project for 2017/2018 that includes specific categories and ownership by board members working towards goal of completion of planning projects to have in place, a season plan, prior to start of 2017 season. Categories include: Sponsorship Committee, Uniform Committee, Growth of the House League Committee, KAIHA Operating Budget Committee, Try Hockey For Free and Learn To Play Programs Committee and a Communications Committee.

-KAIHA as a USAH affiliation must have all coaches for House and Travel comply with all coaching credentials set forth by USAH by no later than 12/31/16. Updates will go out to all coaches with any remaining items to complete before the end of year deadline.

-KAIHA will reimburse all coaches for the required USAH components to include: background screens thru MidAm and USAH, online age specific modules and coaching level clinics. Reimbursements must be submitted by 12/31/16.

-Louisville Ice Cardinals website needs to be maintained by each team’s coach and/or manager. Team pages should be updated with rosters and game schedules. Old season information will be cleared by the website master for each team. Utilization of the website and sport engine app is highly encouraged by all KAIHA programs and teams!

-All goalie clinic to be held in Lexington on 12/16 5pm-7pm. Information is being sent to each coach. This clinic is for goalies and their team head coaches to obtain current USAH goalie coaching advise/tips/training on goalie drills for practices.

-Rink will be installing new rubber floors soon!

-Rink is only closed on official holidays- such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. Public skates and stick and pucks continue throughout any school breaks.


December 2016

-KAIHA held a USAH coaching clinic for levels 1 and 2 in Louisville at Campbellsville University on 12/3/16. There were 60 plus attendees for the clinics receiving classroom and on ice instruction for their coaching certification.

-Learn To Play next session will begin on 1/8/2017 and will be 15 skates. Try Hockey For Free will be 2/25/17 with a new LTP session starting afterwards.

-There will be a new LTP2 initiated that will run Sunday’s only till Spring. Target date of mid-April for Spring League to begin for all ages.

-KAIHA hopes to add a mentor type program for coaches in the future. This program would provide more information and a means to reach out to other coaches and the board for more assistance.


January 2017

-Communications Committee has been hard at work updating the website with an FAQ tab with helpful information for players and parents. Also sending out emails to the membership with highlights of this information to keep KAIHA membership better informed with our programs and our association.

-Try Hockey For Free is scheduled for 2/25/17 at 4pm. Flyers will be going out soon as well as opportunities to sign up for volunteering to help organize and run this event.

-The House Program has recently put on a “Taste of Travel” weekend play for peewee age players and is planning another for squirt age players.

-KAIHA is actively looking for more coaches to join the LTP/Mites/House programs in the future.

-The board is working on updating team plans for the 2017/2018 season in each age group and will provide updates to the KAIHA membership.

-A new program is coming to KAIHA soon that will provide an affiliation with the NHL team, Nashville Predators. The program is geared towards players age 4-8 who are brand new to the sport of hockey. More details will be released soon in regards to the “Lil Preds” program.

February 2017


-New Lil Pred's Program to be implemented late summer/fall 2017; twice annual program sponsored by Nashville Predators and the NHL; for 4-8 yr olds new to the sport of hockey

-175 KAIHA members for 2016/2017 season; Continuing to work on improving communication to the general membership; working on continuity of website team pages so communication can be pushed out to all teams via website and sports engine app

-Try Hockey For Free scheduled for 2/25 at 4pm; flyers printed and provided via Rob Jenkins and LAHPA; paid advertisements in the Record; ESPN radio ads from Mike Pearce and live television promos thru Great Day Live planned

-Uniform Committee adding an optional third jersey for teams for 2017/2018 season

-Spring League starts April 17th; $150 a player; Flyer coming soon from rink with details


March 2017


- A list of duties/responsibilities for volunteer coaches and manager's has been approved by the Board and posted to the website under the FAQ tab for each position.

- A third (alternate) jersey design was presented and approved by the Board for use by teams.

- 2017/2018 Team Slots and Head Coaches were approved by the Board, all info posted to the website.

-Spring League Flyer was approved for distribution. Will be mass emailed to membership and posted to the website.


April 2017

 KAIHA will work on a legal disclaimer to attach to all items that are sent out as mass emails to the membership that have no direct affiliation with KAIHA.

All travel teams will continue to use the same ice package from the rink as last season. Fundraisers are highly encouraged to offset the per family cost for the season.

THFF update: 63-65 participants Day of event; next LTP session had 53 sign ups

Spring Skate rosters have been provided to each coach running a session by the rink; schedules will be posted to the website on each team page

Mites program will be head coached by Steve Hobbs; All Mites questions should be directed to JD Hobbs.

2016 Taxes have been filed for KAIHA. Consolidation of all KAIHA related accounts will take place over the summer

KAIHA will collect information from each team/age group on planned tryout dates and times for Spring; KAIHA suggests that each team complete a first tryout before the beginning of summer; Each team/age group needs to coordinate with the rink soon on a date and time Ice is available for use of tryout; KAIHA will publish all tryout information on the website for easy visibility


May 2017

Importance of all youth and adult players, coaches, and officials being registered with USA Hockey:

Refresher discussion and examples for need of Mandatory USAH registration


Coaching levels/expenses:

Forecasted numbers for coach certifications and back ground screens needed for 17/18 season. KAIHA to reemphasize to Head Coaches that a maximum of 4 coaches to be on their team’s roster will be reimbursed by the organization for coaching certification and back ground screens


-Tryout Dates:

U10- late June

U12- 6/7@7pm and 6/26@7:15pm





D&O Insurance:

Waiting for current proposal estimate; if within range of previous estimate the board will move forward with purchasing the D&O policy


Team/Association Checking Accounts:

Decision made to move all association's accounts to new bank to facilitate a better process of unilateral organization


Fundraising Rules:

Continued guidance to follow rules associated with a 501(c)3; all monies raised thru team accounts to be dispersed equally between all team members; fundraising committees can reach out to KAIHA for any documentation of organization and tax status needed


Pearce Challenge:

247 kids were brought in thru THFF program in 2 years (4 events); Retention rates of those 247 are still needed; Lil Preds program to be featured on Nashville Predators website starting June 1st; sign ups will run from June thru August; 8 week session, cost will be $145



June 2017

Spirit Wear- A new company will be providing spirit wear items this season, hopeful to use an online store for orders. Will continue to use same company for embroidery of warm ups.

Registered Agents- KAIHA registered agent name and address to be changed to Mark Spelder, Vice President of KAIHA.

Shepard for progression of youth hockey- KAIHA to work on ideas for dispersing information to newer hockey parents in regards to the association and progression of youth hockey.

KAIHA promotion of USAH player, spectator and official codes of conduct; Board representative and USAH official Harry Hotchkiss will be attending team parent meetings to discuss USAH codes of conduct and enforce the policies’ meaning and importance with parents, coaches and players.
